Eat, work, sleep, repeat!
It’s just become the new-normal for most of us. But are you satisfied with this robotic lifestyle?
I bet you don’t!
To be honest, me neither! 😉
Our life shouldn’t be like this! We all love to hang out with friends, watch movies together, and chill on the hill, right? But, we are unable to do this because of this damn pandemic. 🙁
But, I have a solution! (obviously, CDC approved)!
Just lay your eyes on the outside, and you’ll get that solution too!
Do you get it? Look closely!
Yeap, I’m talking about your brick patio! Don’t ignore it anymore just because of its current condition. It’s time to restore the old glaze and use it for socializing. It could be the exit route of your tedious livelihood.
But, you must clean the patio to make it usable. To ease this restoration process, I’ve prepared this step-by-step guide about how to clean brick patio with minimal time and effort.
Ready? Let’s start.
The Appeal of Brick Patio in This Pandemic
I can’t express the appeal of a brick patio in words!
You should ask someone who doesn’t have a patio in their home. Frankly speaking, you should consider yourself the luckiest one if you own a patio. Because, lots of the people around the earth don’t have a patio on their backyard. For your information, about 111 million US residents don’t have any green space within a 10 minutes walk!
See! How lucky you are!
A patio is the only place where you can enjoy the warm weather, soak up the sun, and enjoy a mini outing during this pandemic. It also adds a visually appealing landscape view to your house.
Besides that, you can gossip with your friends by maintaining social distance, chitchat with family members while enjoying nature’s true beauty. Trust me, it will make you feel like a charm!
Research says that people living beside trees stay comparatively healthier, happier, kinder, more creative, and keep the mind calmer!
What’s more important than mental peace?
There’s all good and no bad on owning a brick patio. However, there’s a simple downside of brick patios: maintenance.
Brick patios generally require more maintenance than other patios to preserve their raw attractiveness. Fortunately, it doesn’t take a lot of effort to do the cleaning. Do a thorough cleaning only once in two months, and you are good to go!
How to Clean Brick Patio Effortlessly
We all know the importance of brick patios. But, still we love to procrastinate here!
Because of those immense tasks we have to do, right?
Let’s shorten the process and make the task as easy-breezy as possible. Yes, after immense research, we’ve broken down this brick patio cleaning process only into four steps. Here are the steps –
- Preparing the patio
- Cleaning the bricks
- Removing the stubborn dust
- Reorganizing the patio area
Easy peasy, right? Let’s start cleaning!
Hold on, Gather your tools first
These are the main steps for cleaning brick patios. Before opting for the cleaning process, let’s have a look at the tools we’ll need in this cleaning journey. Let’s explore these.
- Water hose
- Mild detergent
- Bristle brush
- Pressure washer
- Weed killer
- Rubber gloves and
- Safety goggles
Got everything? Let’s start from the first step.
Step 1: Preparing the patio
You must clean the area before cleaning the bricks, right?
In this step, we will basically prepare the patio area for cleaning. We will need a few basic cleaning tools in this step.
- Prepare yourself first
You must prepare yourself before starting the cleaning process. Wear CDC approved masks, rubber gloves, and goggles to protect your hands and eyes. Start the cleaning process only after you are well-equipped.
- Remove every furniture from the patio area
At first, remove the porch swing, chair, table, and any other furniture from the patio area. You should try to move the plants too. Otherwise, cleaning may affect the plants.
While moving the furniture and plants, cover those with a tarp. Well, if there are any non-removable plants, cover those with another tarp. It protects those from dust and cleaning agents. Wherever you are keeping those objects, make sure those are organized in your home.
- Clean the weeds and moss
Weeds growing between the bricks damage the patio. That’s why you must remove those unwanted moss and weeds from the root. You may use the weed cleaner tools to eradicate moss grown under the cement surface.
If you have thick vegetation in the backyard, spray the weed killer about two or three weeks ago. Because it takes at least 14 days to affect properly. It will also remove mold and mildew from the surface as a bonus!
- Level the surface
If your brick patio is too old or don’t maintain it properly, you may notice the leveling issue. You must fix the unleveled bricks on this step.
You may use a flat piece of wood to measure the leveling. Put that wooden piece on the floor and check for the additional spaces. If there is any noticeable space, you should remove that particular brick. Then adjust the height by adding some concrete, cement, or soil on there.
Now, put the brick back and measure the height adjustment. If the height is leveled, then its fine. Otherwise remove the brick again and add more soil or cement on the hole. Continue the same process until the height has been adjusted. And. perform the same task for every displaced brick.
- Saturate the full patio
Here’s the final part of our first step. Get your water hose and saturate the patio with plain water. Make sure that you’ve saturated every single inch of your paver area properly. Appropriate saturation prevents the absorption of cleaning soaps.
Step 2: Cleaning the bricks
After preparing the paver area, it’s time to clean the bricks. I will discuss the cleaning process in this section.
- Get a pressure washer
We will use a pressure washer to clean our brick patio. Get a good quality pressure washer and connect it with a water source. If the machine works properly, you may opt for adding the water solution to it.
- Spray the cleaning solution
Now, start spraying the cleaning solution on the patio surface. Only the right cleaning solution can remove all the dirt and debris from the walls and surface. However, spray the solution as gently as possible. Otherwise, it may leave stripe marking on the surface.
- Let the patio dry
Once you are done with the spraying, it’s time to let the surface dry. It may take a few hours to be dried completely. The completion time basically depends on the environment of your area on that particular day.
However, don’t proceed to the next step until the surface dries appropriately.
- Spray the solution again
I hope that your surface dries completely. So, are we done here?
Because the surface still looks somewhat dirty, right?
So, respray the solution on your patio. This second attempt will make your paver look better than before. However, if you have to continue the spraying and drying action until you restore the beauty of your patio.
By the way, you may notice some stubborn dust still exists on the surface. Well, don’t bother. We will take action against those in the following step.
- Sweep up the residues
Now, you might be wondering about some white powdery residue on the surface. It happens because of the cleaning agents. Nothing to worry about that. Simply sweep up with plain water, and it will vanish within a few minutes.
Step 3: Removing the stubborn dust
You must remove most of the dust from the brick patio by now. Well, I know, there still exists some stubborn dust. It’s completely fine. We will remove those residues in the following section. Get ready for that.
- Prepare a cleaning solution
Don’t get surprised to know that we are going to prepare our own cleaning solution here!
To be honest, it’s pretty easy to prepare this. And, we will use nothing but the household elements in this solution. We will need detergent, soap, warm water, and salt to prepare this solution. Let’s do it.
At first, mix a teaspoon of salt and two teaspoons of mild detergent in a bucket. Then, put some warm water on there and mix all of these. That’s it! Our solution is prepared!
- Apply the solution
Now, put a clean cloth into the bucket and let it soak for a few minutes. Once the fabric is soaked enough, wring it properly. Then, identify the bricks with stubborn dirt and rub those with the cloth.
Rubbing will remove a lot of dust and stains from the surface. But, don’t expect that you can get rid of all of the dust only by rubbing. Check the following step for complete cleaning.
- Scrub the bricks with a bristle brush
Hopefully, most of the stubborn dust has been removed by now. It’s time to finish the cleaning. So, get a bristle brush now and start scrubbing the bricks. Keep scrubbing until the last drop of dust has been obliterated.
Scrubbing with a stiff bristle brush is enough for removing dust. However, if you still can’t remove the dust, you may mix Trisodium Phosphate on the solution to get a better result.
- Rinse with plain water
When you are done with the scrubbing, it’s time to rinse the surface with plain water. Then, dry the surface properly after rinsing. Now, you will notice the shinier outlook of your brick patio has been restored again!
So, how does your brick patio look now? Awesome, right?
I bet it does!
Step 4: Reorganizing the patio area
Well, we are done with the cleaning process. Once the patio floor is dried well, it’s time to move those furniture’s back. Don’t worry. It won’t take much more time. From placing the plants or furniture to hanging the porch swing, you can do it within one or two hours! So, don’t panic about it.
I hope you understand the appropriate process of cleaning brick patios. If you want to learn more, you may check the video from Silver Cymbal. They described the process so well!
How to Prepare Yourself for Cleaning Brick Patio
Maintaining the outdoor space is always a daunting task. But, once you reveal the beauty of your backyard, it will be the reveal-of-century for you!
I know you don’t have unlimited time for these cleaning chores. That’s why I’ve prepared this section to prepare yourself for this cleaning journey.
Let’s do it!
1. Stand up straight
Do I sound ridiculous?
Eh, maybe! But, you should do it!
We all prefer to do the cleaning chores by leaning forward. But never do it. I mean, never ever! It will make you suffer in the long run.
Always stand up straight while working. Maintaining a good posture will keep your back in a sound condition. It’s scientifically proved! Most importantly, it won’t make you tired even after working. Instead of that, you will feel a lot better after the day.
2. Use protective equipment
I can’t express how much importance you should apply to this point. The COVID-19 pandemic has already shown us the importance of using protective equipment while staying on the outside.
Among all of those equipments, you must ensure that you are wearing goggles and rubber gloves. But, avoid the classy-looking sunglasses. It may protect your eyes from the sun, but those are ineffectual against grits. And those rubber gloves will protect your hands from sands and soils.
3. Don’t start scrubbing first
Whenever we are planning to clean something, our brain triggers us to do scrubbing and scrubbing. It seems like scrubbing is the only method of cleaning!
To be honest, you indeed have to scrub the area for cleaning purposes. But, there’s much more to do before starting the scrubbing task.
At first, spray the cleaning agents on the surface. It will remove the raw dust and stains from the surface. Then, you can use scrubbing to remove the stubborn dust. We’ve described the process on the third step of the ‘How to Clean Brick Patio Effortlessly’ section. Take a look if necessary.
4. Maintain a rhythm
“What on earth rhythm has anything to do with my patio cleaning?” – you might be murmuring about it, right?
Well, it matters a lot. When you do something by maintaining a repetitive rhythm, you can complete a task much efficiently.
Personally, I prefer to clean the bricks by maintaining the “S” rhythm. Simply clean the bricks by row by row in sections. It will help you to stay focused and clean sequentially. After the cleaning is done, you will be surprised by noticing how much cleaning you have done within so little time.
5. Listen to some music
Music affects our minds a lot. The pleasurable music leads to dopamine release. You know, this neurotransmitter provides a good feeling, like getting a reward. Even music can alter your mind by relieving stress.
So, if you binge some podcasts or play upbeat music on your earplug, it will be definitely helpful. Besides killing your time, music will keep you energetic during the whole cleaning process.
Just give it a try. You’ll love it!
Cleaning isn’t a tedious task. The method we were following for cleaning our brick patios was wrong.
Leave your thoughts behind and follow the methods I have described in the “How to clean brick patio effortlessly” section. If you follow those steps by taking the required precautions, cleaning will become a charm to you – guaranteed!
Enjoy your brick patio!
